Culture Politic Centrl AmericaABRD 3500 (5 credits)
This five credit hour program highlights the political, educational and cultural aspects of Costa Rica and other Central American countries. DU faculty and local professors and experts present lectures and lead field trips. San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, serves as the home base for the program. Field trips are an integral part of the academic program and focus on the cultural, economic and ecological aspects of Costa Rica.
Project DharamsalaABRD 3510 (1 to 6 credits)
Project Dharamsala: Tibet in India is an international service learning course that combines academic study with volunteer service. There will be on-campus preparation and then approximately one month in India (3 weeks in Dharamsala and one week in Delhi and Agra). Students will perform about sixty hours of service work in Dharamsala, which might include teaching English to Tibetans or Indian school children, or working with a Non-Governmental Organization in Dharamsala. There will be on-going student assignments during the time in India, and a final paper due in January. The on-campus preparation will include five three-hour academic seminars and an overnight retreat. The focus of the academic seminars will be: 1) Tibet in exile and the Dalai Lama, 2) Asian religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism), 3) Indian culture and history, and 4) theory and practice of service learning. These issues will also be addressed in class sessions in India through faculty lecture/discussion, guest lectures, and student reports on Indian/Tibetan history, religion, and culture.

Project El SalvadorABRD 3514 (5 credits)
Project El Salvador: Transition to Democracy is an international service learning course that offers students an opportunity to gain cultural awareness and knowledge of the rich and polemical history of El Salvador, from pre-Columbian cultures to the 21st century. Prior to departure, students will attend an overnight retreat as well as four or five three-hour courses in order to gain an understanding of the various ways in which politics and economics interact in the region. Students will explore topics such as positive and negative impacts of globalization on a small, developing nation; politics and conflict resolution; challenges faced by citizens of developing countries; and the democratization process. Students will perform at least 60 hours of volunteer service in El Salvador and write a capstone paper upon their return. Service work will provide a unique insight into various aspects of Salvadoran society and an opportunity to witness firsthand how communities are striving to meet immediate needs while constructing long-term sustainable solutions to the problems of poverty, underdevelopment, and the lack of social justice.
Project ThailandABRD 3515 (5 credits)
This international service learning course explores the role of tourism in maintaining the delicate balance between communities and their surrounding environments while also promoting sustainable development. Prior to departure, students will learn about trail building for two weekends, in addition to pre-departure academic seminars. The majority of the course occurs in the Karen villages of Northern Thailand. By living, farming, discussing, and traveling through the forests with the Karen, students will learn first hand how the Karen livelihood is intertwined with their forest world. In addition, students will be able to critically understand how community-based tourism has been deployed as a strategic tool for community survival and development. In addition to the learning from villagers, students will be able to work with them in developing hiking trails regularly used by local people for inter-village travel and tourists' hiking activity led by the local guides. Seminars and discussions will take place 'in context' to the learning--reading about the idea of sustainable development, the relationships between people and forests, then going into a village and forests to experience life there first-hand.
Project BosniaABRD 3520 (1 to 6 credits)
Project Bosnia is an international service learning course that combines academic study with a volunteer internship at the University of Denver and in Sarajevo and Vares, Bosnia. While in Bosnia students will perform at least 40 hours per week of volunteer service at a humanitarian aid agency or summer school, attend lectures by Bosnian experts, and complete a series of writing assignments. Before students depart for Bosnia they will attend a weekend retreat, as well as 4 Friday classes, 3 day in-country orientation and a re-entry seminar in September. Student's service and academic study is bridged by writing and discussion in which they are able to apply academic knowledge and theories to actual experiences in Bosnia, focusing on intercultural communication, ethnicity, politics, conflict resolution, education, development, and economics.

Education in American Democracies provides students with direct experience in global and multicultural educational practices through a service-learning partnership in Ecuadorian and Denver-area schools. As students gain an international perspective on varied pedagogical practices through direct service and interaction with American and Ecuadorian citizens, the schools will reciprocally gain support and/or assistance with program development or implementation and other areas to be determined by their institutional goals.
