This is an intermediate level language course designed for students with about a year of Spanish language study who want to practice Spanish in a conversational format. Spanish Travel ImmersionMODL 1050 (3 credits)

This one-week immersion course taught in Merida, Mexico is the ideal way for students to jumpstart their Spanish. If Spanish was studied years ago, or a student recently completed a beginning course, this class will help develop communicative skills and improve listening comprehension through task-specific assignments in a Spanish-only environment. The course incorporates a service-learning project and side excursions to the Mayan ruins and other areas of interest designed to engage students in basic conversation in real-life settings. Students will practice Spanish every moment of this week in the Yucatan peninsula.

Yiddish, the vernacular language of Easter European Jewry, is more than 1000 years old and continues to be spoken around the world today. In this course, we create an immersion environment and focus on speaking and reading modern standard Yiddish and introducing Yiddish culture.

Yiddish: Beginning IIMODL 1302 (2 credits)

Students practice the mechanics of reading and writing Yiddish and the fundamentals of Yiddish grammar, particularly the case system and the three basic tenses, and continue to communicate freely in speech and in writing. Students work on pronunciation and vocabulary building and master the Yiddish vowel system. Students also get a taste of the riches of Yiddish culture or the past two centuries.

Arabic: Intermediate I reinforces beginning level skills while increasing the student's oral and written proficiency. Emphasis is on conversation and vocabulary development, but attention is also given to the mastery of essential grammatical elements. Students will review and refine their knowledge of the Arabic alphabet and complete writing assignments. Cultural practices and language variances among the Arab world are discussed. Prerequisite: MODL 1103 or equivalent.

Arabic: Intermediate II is a continuation in the intermediate sequence in Arabic. Students will further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as they master more complex grammatical concepts. New vocabulary and idiomatic expressions are introduced, and students gain confidence and the ability to manage conversational exchanges. Emphasis is also placed on increasing knowledge about the Arab countries, culture and traditions. Prerequisite: MODL 2201 or equivalent.

Arabic Conversation IMODL 2205 (2 credits)

This is a course at the intermediate level. It prvides the students with the opportunity fo develop skills in colloquial Arabic (Levantine and Egyptian) within social scenarios that they would encounter if they were in an Arab country. It will introduce a different look of the grammar as it applies to spoken Arabic. The couorse will also provide general information about the Arab society which puts this lanuage learning experience into context.

The course is the second level of conversational Arabic that concentrates on two themes: politics and business. It provides the student with the opportunity to develop conversational skills in these subjects they would encounter if they were in an Arab country. The course will also provide general information about the Arab society which puts this language learning experience into context.

Foundations of TranslationMODL 3950 (2 credits)

This course addresses the essentials of translation theory, and basic translation skills that may apply to any language pair. Students will also learn how to address ethical issues that arise when translating sensitive and legal documents.

Lang Access & Community Int.MODL 4705 (4 credits)

This intensive course will prepare students for interpreting in broad human-services areas, such as community-based, health and legal aid organizations; public schools; and social and mental health agencies. Ethics, standards of practice, and roles of the community and human-services interpreter are covered, along with an overview of the profession of community interpreting, language access laws, language and cultural barriers, and the concepts of equal access to justice, services, and care in our country. Students are introduced to different community interpreting sessions on poverty law issues, folk medicine, social service and environmental health, children and family services-related encounters with special focus on immigration, domestic violence, elder abuse, and housing issues. Students practice consecutive interpreting as they gain practical knowledge of the role of the community interpreter in ensuring cross-cultural communication to linguistically-isolated residents. Language Generic with some Language-Specific Training. Prerequisite: Students can take this course without being admitted to the Certificate in Community Interpretation but must have the instructor's permission.
